Anxiety, phobias and obsessive-compulsive disorder
What are anxiety, phobias, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)? The three conditions share some similarities but also carry clear differences. If you think you have one or more of these disorders, take the time to understand their properties and how they can affect you. Understanding how you feel symptoms of anxiety, phobias, and obsessive-compulsive disorder can help you work with a therapist to improve your mental health.
Anxiety
We all feel stress and anxiety from time to time, but what is anxiety in the medical sense? Anxiety is a persistent and deteriorating feeling of fear or dread that prevents people from performing daily tasks.
If your fears and anxieties prevent you from leaving the house, seeking new job opportunities, or following social plans, it may be time to seek help from the therapist in assessing and treating the symptoms. A therapist can help you express your concerns, determine their source, and establish a treatment plan where anxiety can be treated.
Phobia
While anxiety is a generalized fear, a phobia is an overwhelming and irrational dislike of a particular body or situation. Most phobias do not usually appear on a regular basis, but they can cause severe panic (complete with physical symptoms) in situations in which an individual encounters his or her fear or fear directly.
Common types of phobias include fear of heights (phobia), fear of going out in public (agoraphobia), fear of spiders (spider phobia), and fear of germs (necrophobia or ovarian phobia). Sometimes, people can make reasonable changes to their lifestyles to avoid the things they are afraid of, but phobias can also reach the point where they are confusing. In these cases, therapists can treat phobias through psychoanalysis, exposure treatment, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
Obsessive-compulsive disorder
Obsessive-compulsive disorder is characterized by excessive focus or stabilization, whether it be on regulation, perfectionism, hygiene, or irrational thoughts that interfere with one’s functions in daily life. People with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder may spend hours of their usual day cleaning, bathing, rearranging items, counting, repeating, or apparently acting as other random coercions in their thinking process.
The treatment can help those with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Therapists can work with you to guide you away from your obsession and/or coercion, and to more productive and healthy activities. You and your therapist can also explore the root causes of your coercion, and tackle the root causes of your coercion with the goal of preventing them from taking control of your life.
